Stop Waiting! Start Now, Start Small

I Love Ya’ Tomorrow

What are we waiting for? Tomorrow I suppose.

Because that’s when we seem to think that something will somehow turnout differently – that some sort of change will happen on its own.  We seem to be captivated by the notion that tomorrow is somehow always going to be that mystical, magical, majestic day when we will actually accomplish our great awe inspiring feats, actions and deeds.  Victories that include:

  • Stop drinking
  • Stop smoking
  • Start exercising
  • Start a business
  • Take that bucket-list trip
  • Finally writing that book you’ve been talking about
  • Or follow that nagging passion

Tomorrow, oh tomorrow – that illusion, that pirate, that time bandit.  The thief that robs us of so much precious time! And then tomorrow becomes tomorrow again.

Why do we think that we will have more willpower tomorrow than we do today?

This way of thinking forces us to constantly postpone.  And the next day we feel the same as we did before – “I’ll just do it tomorrow,” becomes a common thought.  But Apollo Creed said it best when he shouted to Rocky in Rocky III, “THERE IS NO TOMORROW!

Sorry Annie, that whole tomorrow-tomorrow-I-love-ya-tomorrow gig is old, because what we do today will improve our tomorrows!

Action = Satisfaction

More often than not, it’s our fears that stop us from taking action.  This has certainly been the case for me.  I spent so much time and still often find myself ensnared by this irrational and useless emotion that seeks to stamp out my hope, limit my vision, and ruin all of my happy tomorrows.

All of us have our dreams and desires; yet the days continue to lumber by under the heavy weight of disappointment, as few of our hopes are actually realized

This is because we fail to take action! We can talk until we are blue in the face, but ideas will always remain just ideas until we put some physical effort behind them.  Folks who are actually manifesting some of their dreams and desires are not smarter or luckier than us.  They just seem to get out of their own way, while others sit still and linger on ideas and wait for perfection instead of just taking a leap.

Okay so, a few years ago I decided I wanted to become a published writer.  A lofty idea that not only sounded sort of pretentious at the time, but also rather unattainable.  I had no idea of where to begin publishing books.  But at some point I realized that I didn’t have to know all the steps from A-Z, I just had to know the first few.

So as I began to move down the path toward publishing my first book, the other steps began to reveal themselves.  I began to feel my way through the dark, learning as I went along.  I had never done anything like this before, so I had to take it one step at a time.  But with the help of some key people, all of them are mentioned in the credits of my first successfully published book The Girl Who Carried Too Much Stuff, we were able to overcome my initial trepidations and see this dream become a reality.  And we are truly satisfied!

There is no secret formula to accomplishment.  We just take one little baby step at a time while reminding ourselves daily not to let fear immobilize us.

Start Today

I am a true believer that a person can’t be motivated externally, the desire to achieve in an internal one.  Nothing in my life ever changed until it hurt bad enough or I longed for it so much that I, and I alone, decided to make a change.  We have to wholeheartedly want what we want and then put foot-to-pavement.

Lip service does a disservice to not only your dreams, but to all those who do not get a chance to benefit from what you have to offer.

Many of us never even run the race because we are too afraid we are going to lose.  We compare ourselves to others instead of focusing on our gifts and strengths – Your inner purpose.  What is theirs is theirs, and what is ours is ours alone.  We have what we need already, now it’s time to let it shine…to burst from the ashes and rise like a Phoenix.

Yo, life is a marathon and the best way to finish one is to just put one step in front of the other as you journey down that more beautiful, brighter path…all the while transforming fear into freedom.
